2025 Pastured Poultry Processing Class

We're trying something new this year, we're offering our first on-farm classes! We will be providing 1-day crash courses on raising and processing pastured poultry the Step Back Farm way.
Topics will include:
- Poultry breed types
- Hands-on review of the infrastructure we use on the farm
- Indiana's laws regarding the sale of on-farm processed poultry
- Tools and techniques for a respectful slaughter
- Plucking techniques including hand and mechanical plucking. Bonus duck waxing demo for duck class!
- Carcass cleaning including sanitation practices
- Review of packaging options
This is a hands-on class! You will witness live demonstrations of slaughter and carcass cleaning AND you will have the opportunity to practice these skills on one or more birds yourself.
Every student will go home with 1 cleaned and packaged bird as part of the registration fee. You may also reserve extra birds at our regular retail price with our pre-order page. The full payment for extra birds will be collected at the end of the class.
Your registration today reserves a spot in the class and reserves a bird from our flock. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
Our class schedule follows our flock schedule:
June 28: Spring Fancy Broilers, approximately $39 value each.
August 2: Summer Common Broilers, approximately $30 value each.
October 11: Fall Pekin Ducks, approximately $85 value each.
